Facet Joint Irritation is pain caused by compression, stress or sprain to the facet joint and/or its surrounding capsule. This can lead inflammation to become present in the joint itself, and spasms that are there to try and protect you from further damage.
If the joint is compressed or swollen enough, it can also impinge on your nerve causing pain into your buttock or leg. When this occurs, symptoms in your leg can include weakness and sensations such as sharp, shooting or aching pains, numbness, pins and needles or tingling. The image shows how your spine is made up.
